Er is een aanzienlijke kloof tussen apparatuur, meters en hun elektriciteitsverbruik, wat resulteert in aanzienlijke verliespercentages. Voor de komst van de DIN-rail vermogensmeter , was het ontbreken van goede metingen en elektrische optimalisatie een moeilijk op te lossen probleem geweest. DIN staat voor Deutsches Institut für Normung, wat Duits Instituut voor Standaardisatie betekent. DIN werd in de jaren zeventig het officiële symbool van technische standaardisatie in Duitsland.
Tot voor kort was de onderlinge relatie tussen vraag en aanbod in de energiesector moeilijk te beheersen en te begrijpen. Verschillende sleutelfactoren zijn van cruciaal belang voor een optimale vermogensmeting. Er springen er echter maar twee uit: nauwkeurige metingen van het energieverbruik en het energieverbruik van de gebruiker. Geen van beide kan worden bereikt met traditionele inductiemeters, en daar komt de DIN-rail vermogensmeter om de hoek kijken.

De DIN-rail vermogensmeter zorgt voor een aanzienlijke vermindering van de werklast, terwijl de efficiëntie van het energieverbruik wordt geoptimaliseerd en vraag en aanbod in evenwicht worden gebracht, door twee eenvoudige regels te volgen: als het uitgangsvermogen voldoende is, kan de prijs dalen, waardoor gebruikers worden aangemoedigd om meer elektriciteit te gebruiken. Als het geleverde vermogen echter onvoldoende is, zal de prijs stijgen, waardoor de prikkel voor gebruikers om elektriciteit te gebruiken afneemt.
