A huidige transformator is een meettransformator die wordt gebruikt om de stroom te meten die door een elektrisch circuit gaat. Het rechtstreeks meten van grote stromen met meetinstrumenten is niet alleen kostbaar, maar soms ook erg gevaarlijk en moeilijk. Daarom moet de stroom door het circuit tot een bepaalde waarde worden teruggebracht voordat deze kan worden gemeten. Een stroomtransformator in serie met het circuit vermindert het magnetische veld dat wordt gecreëerd door de stroom die door het primaire circuit gaat en brengt het over naar een tweede circuit dat het secundaire circuit wordt genoemd. Vanwege de circulerende stroom in het secundaire circuit kan de hoeveelheid stroom die in het primaire circuit vloeit, worden gemeten door een meetapparaat dat parallel is aangesloten op de secundaire wikkeling.
Stroomtransformatoren werken anders dan standaard spanningstransformatoren. Het bevat twee wikkelingen vergelijkbaar met een normale spanningstransformator. Telkens wanneer een wisselstroom wordt geleverd in het primaire gedeelte, wordt een magnetische wisselstroom opgewekt die vervolgens de wisselstroom in het secundaire gedeelte opwekt. In deze vorm is de belastingsimpedantie erg laag. Daarom werkt het apparaat onder kortsluitingsomstandigheden. Daarom is de stroom door de tweede sectie gebaseerd op de stroom in de primaire wikkeling, niet op de belastingsimpedantie.
Stroomtransformatoren worden voornamelijk gebruikt voor meetdoeleinden. Als er geen stroomtransformator wordt gebruikt, moet een groot meetapparaat worden gebruikt en moet een groter beveiligingsrelais worden vervaardigd om een grote stroomwaarde te meten. Dit is een dure en uiterst gevaarlijke optie. Het gebruik van stroomtransformatoren maakt het gebruik van kleinere meetapparatuur en beveiligingsrelais mogelijk. Hoewel dit een meer economische oplossing biedt, maakt het ook een veilige werking mogelijk. Omdat de aan de secundaire zijde aangesloten meetapparaten en beveiligingsrelais geïsoleerd zijn van de primaire spanning.
